We were excited to host the two badass and super nice guys from Packing It Out this past week as their journey along the Pacific Crest Trail rolled through Truckee. Seth ‘Cap’ Orme and Paul ‘Spice’ Twedt’s positive attitudes were contagious and the whole Tahoe Sports Hub Team was very impressed by both of them. Packing it out aims to leave the Pacific Crest Trail better than they found it, just like they did last year, when they removed 1,090 lbs. of trash off of the Appalachian Trail. Cap and Spice began their journey on the 2,650-mile trail from Mexico to Canada at the start of May. Their late-season hike has enabled them to clean up trash that previous hikers have left behind. The team has already hit half of their original goal, 1,000 lbs. If they continue at the rate of a pound a mile, they’re on track to pick up 2,500 lbs of trash.
The team attributes so much trash at the beginning to the ‘Wild Effect’: hikers inspired by Cheryl Strayed’s Wild, who don’t properly prepare and overpack, then ditch gear in their first miles. “It’s fantastic that folks are out there hiking, but there is a level of knowledge that the outdoor industry should encourage before these hikes begin,” Orme said. “By documenting this process, I think we’re able to make potential thru-hikers aware of the gear they don’t need, and the damage it can do on the environment.”
Cap and Spice arrived in Truckee on Tuesday morning and packed in a interview on 101.5 with Truckee’s own Lindsay with an “A” a meet and greet at the shop on Tuesday night. Later that evening we took the guys over to Old Town Tap where the restaurant’s owner, Luke Bill (also a former PCT alum) rolled out the red carpet with some complimentary treats and brews. After a night of comfort on Wrenn and Rob’s couch the guys headed back out to the trail early Wednesday morning to continue their journey cleaning up the PCT and spreading awareness of conscious and sustainable outdoor recreation. Happy trails boys and thanks for the hard work and for stopping off at Tahoe Sports Hub to share your story!
